The human body has a fantastic physiological survival response called "tunnel vision." Tunnel vision occurs in high stress situations and provides extremely clear and acute vision on one particular threat. This allows the body to focus sharply on the largest threat at hand to help navigate a proper and safe response.

However, tunnel vision can become deadly if you are not aware of its "side effects." Tunnel vision has happened to most of us who have participated in contact sports, competitive shooting, or even driving a car. It literally looks like you are looking down a tunnel with zero peripheral vision, yet extreme clarity in one area.

Tunnel vision has been reported to occur in nearly all individuals who have been involved in a shooting. It is imperative to practice "after action drills" during your shooting routine to break tunnel vision.

Why? Because bad guys travel in packs. If you are acutely focused on the threat in front of you a bad guy could be standing right next to you or behind you without you even noticing! Watch this short video for an example of an after action drill. Notice that after action drills are taught differently by different academies, shooting instructors, and law enforcement training. The common themes of "after action drills" to conduct after engaging a target are:

1.) Scan laterally side to side from your target with your weapon at the ready (scan for additional threats)
2.) Check your weapon (make sure the slide is in battery and there are no malfunctions)
3.) Check over each shoulder to look for threats behind you (scan your 360 from floor to ceiling)
4.) Return to your threat to be sure your shots were effective

Practice these drills at the range until they become muscle memory. Prepare for the worst, pray for the best.
